NFL Combine Data Pt. 1
misc ?? Comments 14/Mar/2016 MonJust a very quick look at NFL combine data (1999-2014) with the draft coming up. The first figure plots median 40 yard dash times by draft round for each position. The positive relationship is clearly evident, particularly for tight ends, wide receivers, cornerbacks, defensive ends, and outside linebackers (Pearson's R > 0.92). While not necessarily surprising, it demonstrates the premium NFL front offices are placing on athleticism for the pass catching and pass rushing positions.
The next figure looks at median vertical jump height by draft round. Vertical jump measurements were not as strongly linked to draft round as 40 yard dash times but still demonstrated the expected relationship, especially for skill position players (i.e. wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends).
